Continuing their impressive streak, Germany's leading beach volleyball athletes, Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler, effortlessly advanced to the round of 16 at the World Championships in Mexico. Following an impeccable performance in the group stage, the German champions secured a victory against the Austrian pair, Julian Hörl and Alexander Horst, in the round of 32 with a score of 21:12, 21:17.

"A lot of things went very well today. I was quite nervous before because it's the knockout stage now, but all the more awesome," said Ehlers, while Wickler was also pleased: "That was a very, very good match."

The pair are favorites to meet Poland's Michal Bryl and Bartosz Losiak in the round of 16 on Thursday.

The world number seven Ehlers and Wickler are the only male World Championship starters from Germany.

Things went much worse for the ambitious Rio Olympic champion Laura Ludwig and her partner Louisa Lippmann. As at the end of the group phase, the duo lost to a Brazilian team.
