LIV Golf Players Facing Tough Path to Majors and Olympics

Eighteen LIV Golf players competed in the Masters this year, but that number is expected to be halved next year, with only past champions and recent major winners currently eligible. Everyone else is well outside the top 50 in the world rankings.

This is because the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) committee rejected LIV's application for ranking points, making it difficult for LIV players to get into the majors.

The situation is even worse for the Olympics. The Olympic Golf Ranking for the 2024 Games began in June 2022, two days after LIV Golf finished its inaugural event. This means that LIV players have been at a disadvantage since the start of the Olympic qualifying period.

The 60-man field for the Olympics is taken straight from the world ranking on June 17, 2024, with a maximum of two players from each country, or four players if all are in the top 15.

With just under five months to go, only eight players from LIV are currently in the top 60 of the Olympic Golf Ranking: Cameron Smith of Australia, Joaquin Niemann and Mito Pereira of Chile, Abraham Ancer of Mexico, Thomas Pieters of Belgium, Anirban Lahiri of India, Scott Vincent of Zimbabwe, and Sebastian Munoz of Colombia.

Even though Ancer is currently ranked outside the top 100, he and Pereira could still qualify for the Olympics if no one else receives ranking points in the next five months. However, this would require a strong performance from both players in the remaining majors and other events.

Smith is the best-placed LIV player in the Olympic rankings, but he faces stiff competition from other Australian players, such as Cam Davis and Min Woo Lee, who will have access to more ranking points events.

LIV Golf players may also have a chance to qualify for the Olympics through special invitations. The Masters, for example, traditionally awards a special invitation to one or two international players. However, it is unclear whether Augusta National would consider LIV players for this invitation.

Overall, LIV Golf players face a difficult task in qualifying for the 2024 Olympics. The Olympic Golf Ranking system is stacked against them, and they will need to perform exceptionally well in the remaining majors and other events in order to make the field.
