US athlete Noah Lyles addresses NBA players who criticized him in the 'world champion' debate

Last month, Noah Lyles, the current world champion in the 100- and 200-meter sprints, sparked widespread discussion when he questioned the NBA player's claim to have conquered the world championships in his domestic league.

With Team USA losing three of their last four FIBA World Cup games and not even missing out on a medal, basketball fans are beginning to recognize the point the American sprinter is trying to make.

In a recent interview with GQ Magazine's Chris Cohen, he was asked what he thought about all the backlash he's been getting and how people around him are starting to apologize. It started last month, when Lyles expressed his thoughts on the huge difference between winning domestic games and actually playing internationally.

"I had to watch the NBA Finals with the world championship title on their heads. What world championship? The United States? Don't get me wrong. Sometimes I love America, but that's not the world. That's not the world," he said with a laugh.

"We are the world," he said, referring to global competitions like the one held in Budapest this past August." Almost every country fights, prospers and displays their flags here to show they're represented. There are no flags in the NBA. We have to do more. We have to show ourselves to the world.

In a recent interview, he acknowledged that the NBA is the best league in the world, but he clearly explained his position.

"Honestly, I really think the NBA is the best. I've never doubted that. But, in a way, we don't understand both sides of sports." There's a national side and a world side, and you can't win a world championship title without facing the rest of the world," he said.

Lyles responded to pop star Drake, who also tried to mock the American athlete's stance on 'world championships'. Several NBA players did their best to refute Lyles' comments, including superstars like Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard and Devin Booker.

"It's just one of those situations where they finally decided to listen. I've been saying it - the whole world has been saying it, really, for years. It's just that this time they took notice and had their say," the sprinter said this weekend.

Noah also responded to music icon Drake, who is a global ambassador for the Toronto Raptors, after Drake said, "He looked in the mirror the night before and thought this speech was going to be tough ...... Now the whole league doesn't judge you.

"There's a lot of funny things, like Drake noticing that. Like, Drake, what are you doing here? Go home. It's an NBA conversation. But I can't go on TikTok for more than three seconds because it's like talking about myself. And I'm like, can I watch something else? I don't want to look at myself. I'm on Twitter to look at other stuff," Lyles replied.

The sprinter's opinion has become more credible as Lithuania, Germany and Canada just beat the USA Basketball team at the FIBA World Cup.
